Description

Philipburn Hotel is a four star country house hotel in the Scottish Borders. Dating back to the 18th century, it was originally the Dower House for the Philiphaugh Estate and retains plenty of period character. Sitting in four acres of woodland grounds and gardens, the hotel is on the outskirts of the historic town of Selkirk.

Philipburn Hotel is around a one hour drive from Edinburgh and Selkirk is on the scenic route of the Tweedbank to Edinburgh railway line.

Individually styled rooms

Philipburn Hotel has twenty individually styled, comfortable rooms, some with mezzanine floors, balconies overlooking the gardens and spa baths. There are twelve comfortable guest rooms in the main hotel building, and eight on the grounds of the hotel. Family accommodation is available in the lodges and garden rooms.

All are en-suite with no two rooms being the same. Deluxe rooms are very spacious and perfect for that special treat or romantic stay. All feature a spa bath and balconies overlooking the grounds and gardens. Some Deluxe rooms feature a four poster bed or a mezzanine floor dividing the lounge and bathroom from the sleeping area.

All bedrooms are furnished to a high standard and are equipped with flat screen LCD TV with digital Freeview; tea and coffee making facilities; hairdryer, and free WiFi.

There is plenty of free off-street parking and a limited number of pet friendly rooms.

Local larder

The restaurant offers extensive menus with family favourites, traditional and classic dishes to suit all tastes.

The menus change regularly but, when in season, typical dishes might include a dish of pheasant supreme with apricot and tarragon wrapped in bacon, set on a potato rosti and served with a red wine jus. More traditional options might include the steak, ale and mushroom pie or the beer-battered cod served with peas and chips.

There is an extensive range of vegetarian dishes and the kitchen can happily cater for special dietary requirements.

Out & about

Local attractions include some of Scotland’s best fishing facilities, hiking and horse-riding trails; the thrills and spills of National Hunt racing at Kelso, and some very attractive golf courses.

Cycling is a great way to explore the attractive market towns and rural splendour of the region. The hotel has a secure cycle store if you fancy bringing a bike and taking on the local Four Abbeys route or Tweed Valley path.

Centrally located, Best Western Plus Philipburn House Hotel is ideally located for touring the Scottish Border towns and the places of local interest including Floors Castle, Dryburgh Abbey and Abbotsford House, home of Sir Walter Scott.
