Way back in the 14th century, when the first fortified building went up at Venlaw, typical specifications would be for the castle to be arrow-proof; able to withstand a siege and have ramparts from which to fire on your enemies.
Now that armed bandits are less common in the Scottish Borders, ensuite fittings, comfy beds and peaceful woodland grounds are among the more valued attractions of the current Castle Venlaw.
Lay siege to today’s Big Deal and you can enjoy a relaxing overnight stay in one of the most beautiful venues in the Scottish Borders.
Built in 1782, in the Scottish Baronial style and nestling in its own woodland grounds, Castle Venlaw may be over 300 years old but it can offer a warm and comfortable welcome to 21st century guests.
Rooms with character
This Big Deal is for two people to spend a night in a classic room at Castle Venlaw with a three course dinner in the evening and a full Scottish breakfast the next morning.
There is also the option to extend your break for a second night – again on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
With ensuite facilities and views over the castle grounds or the Borders’ countryside, all of the rooms at Castle Venlaw are pretty special. However, if you really wanted to make your break one to remember then there is the option to upgrade your stay to a four poster room.
As well as a four poster bed, these rooms also feature a walk in shower, double bath and heated floors as well as a TV and DVD player. It costs an extra £25 to upgrade to a four poster for one night and £20 extra for a two night stay.
In addition to a full Scottish breakfast in the morning, the Big Deal includes a three course dinner from the table d’hote menu for two, each night that guests stay. Fresh, Scottish produce appears extensively on the regularly changing menu.
Relax in library
From mountain biking to sightseeing, there is plenty to do in the Scottish Borders. Or you could just relax in the castle Library room with a book and a coffee or savour an after dinner malt from the hotel’s extensive whisky collection.
Less than an hour from Edinburgh and only an hour and a half from Glasgow, Castle Venlaw is an easy to reach destination for a short break. Its elegant accommodation has won it lots of admirers. This is what one very happy guest wrote on TripAdvisor after a previous 5pm offer:
‘Beautiful setting, fabulous room, lovely food and friendly staff. Stayed for a night in Venlaw to celebrate wedding anniversary. Got a great deal on 5pm for dinner, bed and breakfast in a four poster room with a double bath. The bed was beautiful and the food was delicious. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. Would definitely go back, especially if another deal was available.’
