The Auld Alliance has benefited France and Scotland for some 700 or so years.

They gave us Bordeaux, Burgundy and one of the world’s greatest cuisines. We gave them whisky and great smoked salmon.

Celebrate the treaty with today’s Big Deal on a meal at the recently opened Liberté Bar on North Street in Charing Cross.

New French bar

Run by the same team that have YesBar on Drury Street, Liberté is a contemporary French bar.

The spacious dining room and bar have a mezzanine level which, when combined with the booth seating, mean that Liberté is ideal for both dining with friends and in a more intimate setting.

Sun deck and beer garden

The outdoor decking area and beer garden at the rear are always popular and provide an excellent al fresco dining option – although we realise that this may be wishful thinking as autumn sets in properly.

Classic French bar

Available seven days a week, today’s offer comes in two forms.

Option one is for two people to have a starter and main course from the a la carte menu.

Option two is as option one, and includes a glass of house white or red wine for each guest.

The menu is subject to change, but is always packed with appealing choices. From the starters, we would go for the moules marinière – served with a baguette – or the chicken liver pâté which is spiked with Cognac and served on toasted brioche.

There are a number of burgers among the main courses along with options like the boeuf Bourguignon, a classic beef and red wine casserole, or the bouillabaisse, a fish stew made with mussels, prawns, clam, squid and lobster, all flavoured with saffron, herbs and a tomato rouille.

If you wish to add a dessert, we can’t see past the crème brûlée of the moment but we accept that some of you will feel duty bound to try the deep-fried Mars Bar.

A supplementary charge of £5 is required for steak frites and £7 for lobster; payable directly to Liberté.

Try it out

Today’s Big Deal is an excellent introduction to Liberté Bar.

With great availability, this deal could be used for a lazy weekend lunch or a pre-show meal – the King’s Theatre and the O2 ABC are a ten minute walk.
