As the Spice Girls launch their Viva Forever! musical, you may remember that they originally told us to spice up our lives by the frankly baffling method of ‘shaking it ha aka’.
You may find it simpler, and ultimately more fun, to spice up your life by snapping up today’s Big Deal on a two course meal at the very popular Southern Spice restaurant on Sauchiehall Street.
Authentic Southern Indian
The Southern Spice restaurant specialises in the fantastic cooking of southern India. One of the regions most famous dishes is the dosa – a large savoury crepe which is stuffed with various tasty fillings and served with a range of dips.
Today’s’ Big Deal is for a starter and filled dosa from the a la carte menu at Southern Spice.
A few items are excluded from the deal (seafood, mixed grills, rova-based dosa, king dosa, £2 supplement on mixed platter starters), but otherwise diners can choose any starter or dosa.
Typical southern Indian starters on the menu include medu vada: deep fried savoury doughnuts flavoured with onion, green chilli and pepper.
Alternatively, idli are steamed rice cakes made with zero oil and which come with different mouth-watering dips. Personally, we reckon that the lamb chops, marinated in spices and then cooked in the tandoor oven, will be a big hit.
From the dosas, the choice ranges from simple fillings like the potato masala to lamb curry via egg dosa and spicy chicken fillings.
Not long after The Southern Spice opened, it was reviewed in the Sunday Herald by Joanna Blythman who wrote that, ‘Southern Spice is no standard curry house… the food is clearly authentic enough to find favour with people who know what the real thing should be like… front of house service at Southern Spice is as charming as the food’.
We’re not going to argue. If you want to see why The Southern Spice floated Blythman’s boat, then today’s Big Deal is just £7 for a starter and dosa.
