New stuff is great – where would we be without the Star Wars season of Angry Birds? – but there are also times when some old world charm is required.
Step forward today’s Big Deal on an overnight stay in Moffat House Hotel in Dumfries and Galloway.
Originally built for the Earl of Hopetoun in the 1750s, Moffat House was designed by Robert Adams, the celebrity architect of his day.
Fast forward two and a half centuries and Moffat House Hotel retains its old charm and elegance but combines them with modern comforts and a warm welcome.
It’s the perfect setting for anyone keen to take a break from the city and relax in of Scotland’s prettiest little towns.
Just over an hour from Glasgow and an hour and half from Edinburgh, Moffat House Hotel is just off the High Street in the Victorian spa town of Moffat.
Along with sandstone pillars and a sweeping cantilevered staircase, it features twenty, individually decorated, ensuite rooms and free Internet access.
This offer is for two people to indulge in a one night getaway break in a standard double or twin at Moffat House Hotel.
As well as a full Scottish breakfast in the morning, guests will be treated to an afternoon cream tea in the Adam Lounge. A chilled bottle of Prosecco on arrival will help you relax into your break.
If you want to make your stay extra special then there may be availability to upgrade to a four poster room for an extra £25, payable direct to hotel.
If you choose to take lunch or dinner at the hotel (not included) then you are in for a fine meal.
Main courses in the Hopetoun Restaurant might feature choices such as the roast leg of Scottish lamb
in a minted red-currant jus with rosemary infused mash; the beef Chateaubriand from the grill menu or the baked seabass fillet which is presented in a lemon and caper infused butter with wilted spinach and accompanied by garlic and herb new potatoes.
More informal meals, such as the classic fish ‘n’ chips or the house steak and Guinness pie, are available in the Adam Lounge.

Moffat House has had over 250 years experience of welcoming visitors. This is what a recent guest had to say on TripAdvisor. We’ve edited it for length but not meaning:
‘What a fantastic place to stay… In all honesty, this is probably the best hotel I have stayed in over the past few years in Scotland… It would be hard to surpass this for the warmest of stays. The hotel itself is full of charm, but what makes the hotel a cut above many others is the food and hospitality, without doubt it is second to none. Nothing was a problem for any member of staff, just ask, and it was done, with a friendliness and enthusiasm which was nice to see. The staff clearly love their job and environment, and it is reflected in the level of service I and my colleagues received. I actually wish I could have stayed longer…’
