The temperature may be dropping faster than X Factor’s ratings but there is always a warm welcome at the beautiful Coul House which hides in the hills above the village of Contin, Ross-shire.
Built in 1821 as a private home for the 7th Baronet of Coul Sir George Stewart Mackenzie, this Grade A listed building is now a family-run country house set in the stunning scenery of the northern Highlands. A perfect base from which to explore, there are plenty of nearby opportunities for hill walking, mountain biking, golf, fishing, wildlife watching or simply to relax with a good book and a glass of wine by the roaring log fires.
While the proud owners see the hotel as an ongoing refurbishment project, the hotel retains much of its historic charm thanks to the many unique architectural features such as the ornate plasterwork; stunning period fireplaces and the roaring open fires.
All the 21 bedrooms have en suite facilities with bath/shower combined, television, hot drinks facilities and beautiful views of either Strathconon and the mountains beyond or the rear lawn and mature woodlands. As with any old house all of the bedrooms are different sizes and shapes, this is also true for the en suite bathrooms.
A delicious cooked to order, full Scottish breakfast is included in the deal. If, like many of the locals, you opt to dine at Coul House you can choose from a seasonally changing a la carte menu that uses both local and international produce and ingredients.
Head Chef Garry Kenley insists on making everything from scratch: all his stocks and sauces, even his ice cream and pastries. He also cures and smokes fresh fish and meat on site using traditional Highland methods.
Ideal for a cosy winter getaway either before or after Christmas, today’s Big Deal at Coul House would make a fantastic gift.
And if you would like to extend your stay by another night, you can always simply buy two tickets.
Previous guests have loved it. This is what Krashtest had to say on TripAdvisor on the 30th October:
‘Stopped overnight here and was very, very sorry we couldn’t stay longer. Stunning setting, friendly people, beautiful breakfast – and unlike most of these sort of hotels in Scotland, modernized just to the right amount, without losing any of the ambience. Highly highly recommend!’
