The French poet Baudelaire once said, ‘Any man can go without food for two days but not without poetry’.
It’s an intriguing philosophical proposal best answered with the carefully thought out response: ‘Aye right!’
For poetry on the plate, book in for today’s Big Deal on a beautiful dinner for four at the Fairways Restaurant in The Marine Hotel, Troon.
Handily located at just 30 miles from Glasgow, the Marine Hotel, Troon has long been one of the gems of the Ayrshire coast. It’s particularly popular with golfers who love the fact that its Fairways Restaurant overlooks the 18th hole of the Royal Troon course.
Purpose built in 1894, the hotel was given 4 AA stars in 1912 and has maintained that rating ever since – the only Scottish hotel to have done so.
2 AA Rosettes
The proud holder of 2 AA rosettes, The Fairways restaurant at The Marine Hotel serves modern Scottish cuisine. As well as overlooking the Royal Troon, it also has views to Arran – perfect for a clear, moonlit winter’s night.
This offer is for four people to enjoy a three course table d’hote menu in The Fairways Restaurant. The menu changes on a daily basis depending on the best produce that the kitchen’s suppliers can offer. Usually, there are at least six starters, six main courses and six desserts to choose between.
Typical of the menu might be starters such as the chicken, pork, and apricot terrine wrapped in Ayrshire bacon; the honey-whipped goats cheese, which comes with compressed watermelon, asparagus spears and a pea shoot salad with red wine syrup, or the confit of Gressingham duck leg slowly cooked in herbs and spices before being served with a salad of rocket leaves.
Braised feather blade of Scottish beef, slowly cooked in red wine with a pearl onion and thyme jus and buttery mash is a popular main course. Fish fans may prefer something along the lines of the roasted cod on crushed new potatoes with sauce vierge and root vegetables.
The choice of desserts might include a coffee and cinnamon pannacotta or the ever popular sticky toffee pudding served with a butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream.
Supplements will apply to some dishes like the sirloin steak and cheese selection.
This lip-licking Big Deal would be perfect for a pre-Christmas celebration with friends or family. Valid until the end of January 2013, it would be ideal as a night out to look forward to in what can sometimes be the dull start of the year. Of course, it could also be used as a Christmas present. Just remember to drop enough hints so that the recipient includes you in the dinner party.
The Fairways Restaurant has had lots of ‘excellent’ ratings on TripAdvisor. This is what a recent diner had to say:
‘Lovely view from the restaurant. Good food, service and view. Worth asking for a window table to look out across the golf course to Arran. Large helpings so unless you have a good appetite three courses will leave you very full. Wine and spirits prices very reasonable.’
