According to Chinese folklore, the plant Purslane was known as the vegetable for long life.
Obviously, we’re not going to tell you that today’s Big Deal with Purslane restaurant in Stockbridge is the key to immortality but we’re certain that you’ll be remembering it with pleasure for a very long time.
The restaurant reviewer for Scotland On Sunday described a meal there as ‘one of the most enjoyable meals of my year’ and, the last time we ran a similar deal, buyers commented that they were looking forward to ‘excellent food at a very reasonable price’.
We think more people should eat at Purslane and today’s Big Deal on a gourmet, seven course tasting meal is the perfect way to introduce you to the restaurant.
Casual fine dining
Purslane Restaurant is run by chef proprietor Paul Gunning who has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants under high profile chefs such as Marco Pierre White and Jeff Bland of number one at the Balmoral.
While Paul’s skills may have been honed in fine dining restaurants, Purslane offers a more casual, cosy setting in which to enjoy seasonal, locally sourced dishes.
Some 80% of Purslane’s suppliers are based in the Stockbridge area with familiar names such as Bowers the butcher and Armstrong’s the fishmonger being picked out on the menu.
The offer is for two people to each enjoy a seven course tasting menu at Purslane. A glass of Prosecco for each diner will get your meal off to a fizzy start.
The actual dishes on the menu will change according to which ingredients are in season but the menu below is typical.
Sample Tasting Menu
Poached haddock with a potato salad and tartare sauce
Chicken and pancetta roulade, baby gem purée and Caesar dressing
Pan-fried sea bream with a creamed haricot blancs and curly kale
Harissa marinated rump of lamb with spiced cous cous and pickled carrots
Tiramisu with cardamom sorbet
Paul’s innovative dishes and Purslane’s friendly, casual atmosphere have won lots of friends. This is what the latest edition of The List Eating and Drinking Guide made of Paul’s cooking:
‘The cooking is clever and assured.’
