From Anthony and Cleopatra to Ant ‘n’ Dec some things just fit together perfectly.
Celebrate the pairing of fantastic steak with marvellous wine thanks to today’s Big Deal from the recently opened 1051 GWR in Glasgow’s West End.
Available until the 22nd of March 2016, this offer is a great way to add some winter cheer to the colder months.
Available Sunday to Thursday from noon to 9.45pm, the offer is for two people to share a magnificent 600g Chateaubriand steak along with two side dishes and two sauces. The offer also includes any bottle of red, white or rosé wine from the wine list.
Cooked your way
Locally sourced, the Chateaubriand is dry aged for a minimum of 21 days. If the two diners prefer to have their beef cooked to different specifications then the chef will be happy to split this.
The steak sauces on offer at 1051 GWR are red wine jus, Béarnaise or black peppercorn while the selection of sides includes gratin dauphinoise, hand-battered onion rings, green salad, mixed salad and, of course, hand-cuts chips which are available fried in beef dripping or regular oil.
Cosmopolitan bar and kitchen in West End
Originally a Victorian railway station, 1051 GWR is a cosmopolitan bar and kitchen on Great Western Road in Glasgow’s Kelvinside.
Designed in the Beaux Art style by J.J. Burnett, the building underwent an extensive refurbishment before relaunching as 1051 GWR towards the end of 2015.
The renovations revealed original sandstone walls while the newly installed train carriage-style booth seating underlines the railway heritage of the category B listed building. A wood-burning stove keeps the spacious interior toasty during the colder months.
1051 GWR is the first restaurant in the UK to be owned by a restaurateur with an MSc in Gastronomy and this is reflected in the carefully designed menu.
The experienced chefs, brothers Steven and Chris Caputa have 40 years food preparation experience and, along with their kitchen team, are skilled at designing dishes that allow the quality of the raw materials to shine through.
1051 GWR has quickly attracted lots of enthusiastic reviews on TripAdvisor:
‘Had a lovely time. Great selection of beers. Food tantalising and delicious. Decor and ambience enticing and the building itself historic. Staff delightful and helpful. Well worth a visit!’
This one was edited down from a much longer review:
‘Excellent food and great value for money. Tastefully decorated inside, the lighting is warm without being too low… A diverse mix of young and old customers alike created a positive atmosphere you could feel a part of, with the layout affording you privacy at the same time. A passion for craft beer, particularly Glasgow brewed, was obvious… Exemplary service will clearly be a major part in the success of 1051 GWR… The staff had a calm efficiency about them and I liked that they dispensed little samples of beer to customers; extras go a long way… This was a very enjoyable meal and I wouldn’t hesitate to come visit again. Great value for money and a relaxing atmosphere with great service. Worth a visit.’
