Since launching in April, Cromlix has quickly garnered lots of rave reviews and has even scooped the Scottish Hotel of the Year Award.

Originally built in the Victorian era, this elegant mansion at Kinbuck near Dunblane has been given a luxurious new lease of life.

Beautiful suites

The suites, most of which feature hand-painted, freestanding baths in gold, silver and copper, have all been named in recognition of famous Scots.

Whether your room is Robert the Bruce or Sir Chris Hoy, room facilities include 32 inch televisions all disguised as mirrors, a personal safe, iPod docking stations, free internet access and a DVD player is available upon request.

As you might expect, all the rooms boast luxurious 400 thread count Egyptian cotton bed linen and Cromlix’s bespoke range of sumptuous Arran Aromatics toiletries.

Chez Roux

Cromlix has a Chez Roux restaurant offering reasonably priced menus featuring much locally sourced produce.

Formerly of Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles and Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens, award-winning Scottish chef Darin Campbell is in charge of the kitchens.

Devised by Albert Roux, typical dishes might be starters like the treacle-cured Loch Duart salmon with compressed melon and brown shrimps or main courses such as the braised Angus beef cheek with a parsnip purée and seasonal vegetables.

See & do

Cromlix is a delightful venue in which to do nothing more strenuous than taking tea in the library.

More energetic options on the estate include archery, billiards, quad biking, clay pigeon shooting and, of course, tennis.

The hotel has its own loch on the estate. It is stocked with brown trout and guests are welcome to borrow one of the hotel fly rods and try a few casts.

Alternatively, Cromlix is surrounded by great salmon rivers such as Lanrick and can help organise ghillies and permits for guests.

The hotel is within a two hour drive of several notable golf courses at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Gleneagles.

‘We had a very warm welcome and were given a tour of the house interior. It’s lovely and even has its own chapel. We were upgraded to a junior suite. It was amazing, from the enormous bed to the TV hidden within the elegant mirror on the wall. The separate bathroom contained a very large, free-standing bath that you could lose yourself in, and a shower cubicle that doubled as a sauna…’

‘The grounds are beautiful from its long gravel drive, through the woods to a secluded lake. We had afternoon cocktails on the back terrace in the sunshine and again before dinner.”

‘The restaurant is modern in comparison to the rest of the house. It’s an open kitchen so you can see your food being cooked. Albert Roux has put his name to the restaurant and he was visiting on the evening we were there. We ate from the a la carte menu and were very impressed. The food was excellent – well cooked and presented and the service was just right for a relaxing dinner.”
