Humphrey Bogart once said that ‘A hot dog at the ball park is better than steak at the Ritz’. It’s a sentiment which suggests that while Bogey may have been a great actor, he probably wasn’t much fun to go out for dinner with.
His idea of a slap-up, no-holds barred feast probably meant washing the hot dog down with a full fat soda.
Body swerve Bogey’s paltry provisions and fasten your bib and tucker for today’s Big Deal with Balthassar.
Since opening late last year in Glasgow’s Merchant City, Balthassar has wowed the critics and won a loyal following of diners.
It is owned by Alan Tomkins and run by Chef Jim Kerr, two veterans of the city’s restaurant scene who deserve long service medals for all the fine food they have delivered to Glasgow’s gourmands.
A handsome restaurant with marble clad walls, Balthassar was originally one of Glasgow’s earliest fire stations.
Billowing smoke and alarm bells are no longer part of the building’s everyday life but Kerr’s cooking could often be described as firing on all cylinders.
Today’s Big Deal is for two people to enjoy:
Roast Scottish sirloin cooked to your preference with peppercorn sauce OR Scottish salmon with a tasty French style pea sauce. Both are served with French Fries.
For dessert, there is a choice between: vanilla crème brulée; chewy chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce or a plate of French cheese with oatcakes and apple chutney.
The deal includes a glass of red, white or rosé wine to enjoy with the meal.
Writing in The Sunday Herald, Joanna Blythman had this to say about the restaurant:
In Balthassar, I see Glasgow’s answer to the Wolseley in London, a café-restaurant in the grand European tradition, the sort of institution you get in big international capitals, a historic old-world brasserie like Bofinger, Lipp, or La Coupole, where the unique period interior is as much a lure as the food.
Writing on 5pm’s review site, customer Melanie Pierre was similarly thrilled:
‘The food was delicious and the service was impeccable! It was very quiet for a Thursday night, but I hope it will get busier in the weeks to come, because the decor is classy and elegant. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience!’
