Frosoulla's Greek Restaurant

If the holiday hotspots of Corfu, Kos and Crete are not in your diary this year, you can still taste the taverna with today’s Big Deal from Frosoulla’s @ The Greek Golden Kebab Restaurant.

Scotland’s first Greek restaurant, The Golden Greek Kebab, opened in 1972 on Sinclair Drive in Glasgow’s Southside.

Almost 50 years later, it is now run by Frosoulla, the daughter of the original owners. You may recognise Frosoulla from her cooking demos on STV Glasgow.

The restaurant has moved across the road from its original site and the decor has updated.

Frosoulla aims to maintain the traditional Greek culinary heritage of her parents while adding the occasional, well judged update.

Available from lunch to early evening, from Wednesday to Sunday, today’s Big Deal is for two people share the following mezedes menu along with a glass of Prosecco each.

Mezedes are the Greek equivalent of tapas or little plates and they are a very sociable way to share a meal.

Cold mezedes

Tzatziki – creamy Greek yoghurt ,garlic, mint and cucumber dip

Houmous – chickpea, olive oil, lemon dip

Taramasalata – cod roe, lemon, olive oil dip

Hot mezedes

Stifado – tender beef casserole with baby onions, sweet Greek red wine and cinnamon

Revithkia – chickpeas, roasted tomatoes, oregano, Kalamata olive oil and vegetables baked in the oven

Moussaka – the classic dish of layered aubergines or courgettes with lamb mince, herbs and Béchamel sauce

Chicken yachni – tender pieces of chicken cooked in the oven with Greek white wine, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted tomato, mushrooms, potato, peppers and onions

Manitaria pilaff me ouzo – pan-fried mushrooms in ouzo and tossed into a fluffy herb basmati rice

The hot mezedes are served with Cypriot herb-roast potatoes, Greek salad with barrel-aged feta cheese and Greek style vegetable rice.
