After this summer, very few Scots are sporting a natural tan.
Turn up the temperature and keep warm up with some fantastic Russian cooking from today’s Big Deal at Café Cossachok in the Merchant City.
Since 1998, this welcoming Russian restaurant and cultural centre has been introducing people to Russian food, culture and vodka.
It’s a colourful, buzzy space that regularly plays host to live music, exhibitions and the occasional outbreak of dancing.
Available from noon to 10pm, seven days a week, this offer is for two people to each have two courses from the Café Cossachok set menu.
Offering six starters and ten main courses, it is a brilliant way to try authentic Russian and Eastern European food.
Typical starters might be the borscht – traditional country soup with cabbage, tomato, beetroot and garlic – or the salmon blini – Russian wheat pancakes served with smoked salmon and sour cream.
If you can’t make up your mind, try the Cossachok mini-bites – the chef’s selection of nibbles, home-style pickles and salads.
A shot of the house vodka is served with the starters. Choose between chilled cranberry or hazelnut.
Popular dishes includes crispy ravioli, deep-fried Russian beef and pork mince ravioli baked with melted cheddar cheese and double cream sauce.
Or you could go Georgian and try the chakhokhbili (nope, we don’t know how it’s pronounced either) – a spicy dish of chicken chunks in a delicious tomato, garlic, tarragon and basil sauce, served with rice.
Vegetarians can tuck into choices like the Babushka blintzes – pancakes stuffed with cabbage, carrot, onion and spices, topped with orange sauce.
The current edition of The List Eating and Drinking Guide praises Café Cossachok for ‘the authenticity of the cooking and sociability of the staff’.
5pm Dining customers have been just as complimentary. The restaurant has a combined rating of 4.5/5. This recent review says it all:
