Today’s Big Deal is a whip cracking, rip roaring show stopper.
Calamity Jane is one of the best loved musicals of all time.
And today we’re giving you the chance to enjoy the fun-filled family show in the grand surroundings of Glasgow’s historic King’s Theatre.
Wild wild west
In the Wild West outpost of Deadwood City in 1876 lives Calamity Jane, a gun totin’, sharp shootin’ heroine who dresses like a man but can’t help loving like a woman.
Well meaning but disaster prone, she tries to help the local saloon owner by promising to fetch a music hall star from Chicago.
A hilarious heart-warming comedy ensues, as “Calam” struggles to find her feminine side while wrestling with her feelings for local gambler Wild Bill Hickok.
Established theatre group
The musical, made famous by a movie adaptation featuring Doris Day in one of her most famous roles, includes songs such as Windy City, The Black Hills of Dakota and Secret Love.
The show will be performed by respected amateur theatre company Pantheon, who were established in a Glasgow cafe in 1927 by five young men keen to promote the arts of theatre, singing and drama.
Keep a close eye on the performers because you may see a star of the future – previous Pantheon members include Rikki Fulton and Molly Weir and more recently Sabrina Carter who has performed in Wicked and Oliver in London’s West End.
Dating back to 1904, The King’s Theatre is one of Scotland’s most historic and significant buildings.
A Glasgow institution, its grand decor complete with red velvet seats and curtains, ornate ceiling and steep balconies, contribute to the magical atmosphere.
It has featured Scottish greats including Stanley, Baxter, Jimmy Logan, Gerard Kelly and Elaine C Smith.
Great night out
Kicking off at 5.30pm on Friday 1st November, the Pantheon’s production of Calamity Jane is an ideal end of the week treat as well as the perfect way to start the weekend.
Based in the lively Charing Cross area of Glasgow, there are many bars and restaurants nearby to enjoy a post theatre meal or drink before heading for a night out.
