Did you know that both Batman and Superman come from Dunoon?
Well, obviously, in real life they come from Gotham City and Krypton respectively but Grant Morrison, the guy who wrote a lot of their stories, lives in Dunoon.
Of course, assorted super heroes are just one of the town’s claims to fame. It’s long been an easy-to-access getaway for anyone keen to breathe deeply the sea air and enjoy views over the Firth of Clyde.
The Big Deal with The Esplanade Hotel is the perfect way to enjoy a two night romantic break on the Cowal Peninsula.
The long established, family-run hotel sits on the West Bay Promenade and offers comfortable accommodation and a warm welcome.
All of the well-appointed and spacious bedrooms are tastefully decorated and have private facilities, remote colour television, direct dial telephone and tea making facilities.
The dining room’s menu reflects the hotel’s location with Tobermory smoked salmon, venison, local mussels and haggis all making regular appearances. Locally sourced from Dunoon, Cowal and the highlands and islands of Scotland, there is an excellent selection of fresh meat, fish and game.
With over 120 malt whiskies also available, guests are unlikely to go thirsty after their evening meal.
When the weather is fine, the sun terrace above the garden is perfect for enjoying the view over the Clyde. When it is fresher, the sun lounges offer indoor comfort.
There is live entertainment in the hotel on most evenings while the surrounding area provides plenty of activities. Golf, stately homes, castle and, naturally, cruises are all on the doorstep.
The Esplanade receives a very positive 4.5/5 in Tripadvisor; dotgil in Edinburgh says:
‘This hotel was situated on the front, with wonderful scenery. There were lovely walks for miles along the sea front. The owners and staff were so accommodating. Service was pleasant, food was lovely and nothing too much trouble.’
