Who needs the Magic Kingdom when Scotland has its own fairytale escapes, happily free of cartoon characters and their grating catchphrases?
Come January, we all need a little break from mundanity, and happily there is an option close to hand.
Cast a spell over someone special with today’s Big Deal from Knockderry Country House Hotel by Cove on the Rosneath Peninsula in Argyll and Bute.
Looking like a storybook castle, the award-winning Knockderry House Hotel is situated on the banks of Loch Long, one of the most magnificent sea lochs of Scotland.
Family-owned and run, it is a beautiful spot in which to escape the rat race.
Great gift idea
With vouchers valid until the end of March 2016, this offer would be certain to raise a grateful smile in the depths of the Scottish winter.
During the colder months, the drawing room with its magnificent woodcarvings and cosy atmosphere make a suitably comfortable and relaxing environment in which to unwind after a day spent walking, sailing or exploring the local area.
Available seven days a week, options one and two of this Big Deal are for a one or two night stay in a contemporary King room with a full Scottish breakfast in the morning.
Option three gives visitors the chance to enjoy a five course evening meal in the hotel. This option is for two people to enjoy the five course dinner with a carafe of wine to share. This option is only available for guests with an accommodation voucher and must be booked at the same time.
Guests staying two nights are welcome to buy four vouchers so both guests can enjoy a spectacular meal in the hotel on both nights of their stay. Alternatively, option two guests could buy two vouchers and eat elsewhere one night.
There is a £10 per night supplement for Friday and Saturday night stays.
Fresh and modern rooms
All of the King rooms have been decorated with a fresh modern feel and feature numerous thoughtful touches such as luxury fabrics, crisp Egyptian cotton, Krupp’s coffee makers, sumptuous bathrobes and Arran Aromatics toiletries.
Each room has a king size bed, flat screen televisions and both DVD players and CD players. Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the hotel including all bedrooms. All rooms are, of course, en-suite.
Dining at Knockderry House Hotel
Dining is a major part of the experience of any stay at Knockderry House and the hotel has earned a Taste the Best award from VisitScotland.
Dinner is served in the old wood-panelled dining room of the original house with its glorious stained glass and a charming outlook over Loch Long.
The kitchen uses only the finest seasonal, Scottish ingredients.
The menus change regularly but typical dishes on the five course evening menu might be the pan-fried Scallops with herb gnocchi, samphire and a parmesan crisp or the slow braised beef cheek with mushroom Tarte Tatin, parsnip fritter, Brussels sprouts and red wine jus.
To ensure that guests have quick and easy access to a variety of little things that might be needed, there is a Butler’s Pantry on the first landing of the main house.
The pantry is well stocked with CDs and DVDs, ironing boards, irons, shoe cleaning kit, housewife/needle and thread as well as useful items like stationary and a clothes brush.
Knockderry House Hotel is very popular with TripAdvisor users. We have edited this long and enthusiastic review for length:
‘Everything is in its favour – serene location, superb accommodation, excellent food, and the best staff of any hotel. What a wonderful place. My favourite hotel… Ideal for a romantic weekend break or just to recharge your batteries… The food is luxurious. The breakfasts are also excellent with great attention to detail and tasty homemade jams and marmalades… Relaxing in the lounge, sat in a leather wingback chair – Hendricks gin and tonic in hand – whilst looking out to the loch, makes you realise that there are little havens in life.
‘Given the high-star quality of all aspects, the fact that the staff are their main attribute is telling. Many hotels have staff that are polite and professional. Few have staff that are so personable as well. A real asset to the business that is reflected in how well the place is run and how welcoming it is to stay in.’
With its turrets and towers, Knockderry House Hotel looks like a fairytale castle. All it needs are a few knights and princesses.
Snap up this Big Deal and write your own happy ending.
