Dining in a double level shoebox best describes this bijoux restaurant with fantastic food and quick and friendly service. Located at the foot of Byres Road, No 16 is very popular with the West End crowd and attracts actors and bohemians and regular clientele. Tables on the mezzanine floor can be a bit tight but there is quite a buzz when the restaurant is full. Scottish food with a French influence is simply prepared with fresh ingredients in the tiny kitchen. The menu is relatively short but is ever changing with the seasons and the food can often be stunning. To start, try the tender pigs cheek with crispy ham & potato croquettes or the deliciously light roasted pumpkin salad with feta and couscous. Mains include a succulent roast supreme of chicken with kale and roasted root vegetables or the sea bass fillet served on a bed of lightly curried lentils with a mussel broth. If you can manage a dessert try the treacle tart with a marmalade of caramelised kumquats. The 5pm pre-theatre and lunch menus are great value and very tasty and come with a glass of house wine. There is an interesting wine list starting at around £15 for a bottle of shiraz and also several house wines by the glass. Advance booking is recommended at this great wee restaurant. Highly recommended
