Our first visit (my husband and myself) to The Fish People Cafe was on a rather dismal, wet and windy Saturday for lunch. From the second we arrived we were warmly welcomed by our waitress who brought water to the table (no charge) and explained the 5p.m. menu to us which was of tremendous value ! However, there were so many other fabulous dishes to savour that my husband decided to go a la carte ! Both his dishes were cooked to perfection - claiming that his Scrabster landed Dover Sole was the best that he had ever tasted . Praise indeed from my discerning other half ! I am vegetarian who opted for the spicy bean soup - absolutely delicious down to the very last drop. I intimated that I would be happy with a selection of vegetables of the day but the waitress insisted on checking out with the chef to see what he could offer me - since they were in the habit of having 'spontaneous vegetarians' dropping in from time to time. Within seconds I was offered two quite different options but plumped for the linguine with vegetables in a coriander oil which also had a little 'kick' to it with the addition of some chillies. Hand on heart I can say that this was the best pasta I have ever had in restaurant either here or abroad ! Pretty sated with our first two courses we opted to share a chocolate mousse with sour cherries and puff candy - and once again delicious ( but not sour enough for my liking). All in, with a bottle of the house Sauvignon Blanc, an espresso and Armanac , we were delighted with the bill - much less than we would have expected to pay for service with a genuine smile and the quality of food we were served. By the time we were about to leave , the dinner menu specials board was going up - offering sashimi of tuna ! I had to drag my husband out as he was prepared to stay on a while and order dinner. This was our first visit but I will certainly be back (even as a vegetarian since we were informed that if you cll in ahead the chef will discuss your dietary requirements and cook you something to order ). All in a magical wee gem by the Shields Road underground !!!
