  The mussels were not nearly as good as those I've had elsewhere and the prawn cocktail was just ok. My beef casserole was very good but my friends battered fish was only crispy at the ends and very soggy for the rest (not good for a "fish restaurant"!). I had a vacherin which was a hard meringue with cream and rasps to finish. Overall not what the City Merchant is capable of.

  Felt the portions were small, and the only saving grace was the chowder which was enjoyed by two of our company. The vegetarian tart was very disappointing as it was so small and tasteless.

  Starter of mussels was lovely however main course was poor. Not what I expected as I've been wanting to try this restaurant for some time.
