Kick back and feel the metaphorical sand between your toes at this Caribbean BBQ bar which has parked its sun lounger on the second floor of Princes Square on Buchanan Street. Modelled on a laidback beach hut, it’s a colourful and chilled spot for some jerk chicken and perhaps one or two rum-based cocktails.
At Sugar Dumplin, the curried goat shoulder is slow roasted until tender and then pulled with scotch bonnets, ginger, allspice and tomatoes to make a fiery curry. The jerk chicken and fried dumplins can be just as tangy when heated up with a dollop of the Lord have mercy hot sauce.
Not that it’s all about the chilli. The Bajan swordfish and salt cod fish cakes come with a pickled cucumber and watermelon salad while the classic side dish of rice and peas is classic Jamaican comfort food. Caribbean-flavoured burgers, fried plantain chips, char grilled ribs and rum-spiked desserts complete the menu and keep everyone smiling like it’s a bright and breezy day on Montego beach.
Sugar Dumplin is on the second floor of Princes Square shopping centre on Buchanan Street. There is ample city centre pay parking at Mitchell and Jamaica Street. The transport hubs of Queen Street and Central station are both within five minutes. Local attractions include city centre shopping, the Gallery of Modern Art and Cineworld.
