Carefully chosen Scottish ingredients are the focus of Cafe Source, a stylish cafe bar in the historic setting of Glasgow’s St Andrew’s in the Square. A former church, St Andrew’s in the Square is now a stunning cultural venue with an emphasis on roots, folk, country and traditional music and dance. Downstairs from the sympathetically restored auditorium, Cafe Source is a sleek contemporary space which specialises in modern Scottish cooking.
Cafe Source sits in Glasgow city centre but its menu uses food from all over Scotland. Well regarded suppliers such as Ramsay’s of Carluke or Taylor’s of Strathaven are proudly listed as is the provenance of many of the ingredients, be they West Coast mussels, Howgate brie or oatcakes from Arran. Dishes with a distinct Scottish flavour include the smoked haddock and leek tart served with a drappit egg or the Crannog oak-smoked salmon and prawn fishcakes. While the ingredients will almost always be Scottish, the dishes are not necessarily so. Other favourites include Cafe Source club sandwich, chilli corn fritters and a braised shin of beef which comes with dauphinoise potatoes and a red wine sauce. They even have a croque monsieur toasted sandwich although, of course, the ham comes from Ayrshire. All in all, Cafe Source provides a vibrant taste of Scotland in Glasgow city centre.
