Discretely tucked away down Mitchell Lane, Glasgow’s Bar Soba manages to be a cool bar/restaurant without having to try too hard. Split over two levels, Soba features a trendy ground floor bar which is decked out with Japanese Manga-style art and a downstairs restaurant space which pulls off the neat trick of having minimalist tendencies while remaining very comfortable. Bar Soba is a cool hangout without being achingly so. Instead, the city centre bar knows how to make sure that its customers are having a good time whether they have come for some fresh pan-Asian food, a cocktail master class (see 5pm’s events page) or simply for a drink and some top tunes at one of the regular Bar Soba club nights.
Asian Fusion
Bar Soba has one of the most imaginative Asian fusion menus in Glasgow city centre. Typical dishes include the miso baked salmon, spicy Thai tom kah kai soup and the Malaysian duck confit which marries marinated, slow roasted, crispy skinned duck leg with chilli men noodles, wok vegetables and a ginger plum chutney. Bar Soba’s sushi is popular and the choice ranges from a simple roasted red pepper nigiri to a more off the wall Crazy Boy which is California maki roll lightly fried in tempura batter and served with sweet chilli. Leave room for Bar Soba’s desserts. Where else in Glasgow will you get a Soba mojito ice cream: rum and lime ice cream topped with mint syrup?
