We have lunched at No 29 on many occasions and have enjoyed the location, service, food and atmosphere. Our holiday Monday lunch visit was enjoyable but was not up to the top notch food of previous visits. Our welcome was warm and we were shown to table 6 which is a booth. The table was at a distinct angle being chest height at one side, which made eating a little uncomfortable.
We started with the warm bread sliced at the table although the breadknife slipped and landed on my lap. Fortunately no damage done.
The starters did not impress as the 29 Prawn cocktail was served in an ice cream Sunday glass and lacked freshness plus the pea soup was an average dark green. To follow we had a beautifully cooked tender chicken breast with mash and peas which was unfortunately swimming in an almost black gravy which had spilt. The grilled pork was also tender and well cooked, set on a delicious, crunchy bread-crumbed black pudding mash surrounded by the same dark brown gravy.
The service was friendly and efficient. The 5pm lunch deal was complimented by a glass of easy drinking house wine and plenty iced water. Perhaps a holiday Monday was simply a blip and not a good day to visit No 29 not an indication of slipping food standards.
