After reading 'excellent' Trip Advisor reviews, I was extremely excited about this birthday treat dinner. Unfortunately I was disappointed in the overall experience. Having dined at some of Edinburgh's Michelin star establishments I expected a similar standard at The Pompadour (since the prices are just as high). I felt everything was slightly lacking. The service was not as good - not terrible, but not fantastic. On the one hand we had to chase the waiter for bread that we had asked for and on the other the wine was being topped up at a rate of knots. The restaurant wasn't full and the atmosphere was lacking, despite comfortable seats and a good view from the window, it felt a little depressing.
Our main disappointment was the food. Everything seemed to be tepid and bland. I know that if I had sent anything back, or complained, I'm sure they would have rallied and tried to provide an alternative, but I was so let down by the overall experience by this point, I just wanted to go home. I felt hungry and unfulfilled. I would not rave about any of the food I ate. At noting our mood, a discount was applied to the bill, but it was still an expensive meal that was not worth the money. I wish we had gone for the Brasserie rather than the Pompadour as a less formal setting and less expensive menu would have made for much less of a disappointing birthday dinner. The 5pm deal of 2 courses for £45 plus an aperitif is not much of a deal at all. All you really get is a 'free' glass of bubbly. At the time of my booking the menu did not reflect the actual menu, which I notice has now been updated. I expected much more in the way of seafood dishes and was struggling to find suitable options.
