The Birchwood Review

  • Rating Great find in an area not known for restaurants (Rating 4.4/5)
Its a converted bank, brightly lit and spacious between tables, but little atmosphere/ambience, a bit bland. But that was the only aspect that could be called bland. The food was very good. i had the scallops and black pudding on celeriac puree to begin with. Three very contrasting flavours that if not balanced correctly would have been a disaster, but it worked perfectly. The duck main course was equally successful. Roasted duck can be very dry, but this was moist with just the right amount of pink and the dessert - sticky toffee hazlenut pudding with salted caramel sauce and ice cream was as good as it sounds. I had a glass off the house red - a Spanish tempranillo/shiraz blend and it was one off the best house reds I have had. If I was being picky, I I did not care for the overly decorative plates - I prefer plain white and let the colour off the food show, but that is being picky. A special praise for the waitress, whose name I didnt get, but she is Estonian and showed superb customer skills. Will return
