Food was really good, waitress very friendly

The food was really good. The combinations worked well. The only one negative feedback is that the portion sizes were small compared to the price asked for.

    A great wee find

A lovely relaxed atmosphere, not pretentious at all, great for a catch up with a friend. Fab food, good veggie options.

Welcoming and independent Marchmont café bistro

Opened in the summer of 2015, The Birchwood is a bright and cheery café bistro on Marchmont Road in the South Side. Featuring tongue and groove wood panelling; large, sunny windows plus an intriguing woodland mural, it is a tranquil spot for a laidback brunch, lunch or casual evening supper.

Marchmont brunch favourite

Breakfasts and brunch are a big deal at this welcoming café on Marchmont Road. From power porridge to the full Scottish, diners can choose just how healthily they want to eat. Moving away from breakfast, there are also soups, sandwiches and salads.

In the evenings, guests can nibble on sharing platters of local antipasti along with baked Camembert cheeses and marinated olives. The flexible menus change with the seasons; dishes are cooked to order and local produce is to the fore. Popular starters include the seared king scallops with Stornoway black pudding and cauliflower purée and the pigeon breast with Puy lentils.

Typical main courses might be the beef cheek bourguignon or the fillet of hake with seafood bisque and cockles, lemon and dill crushed potatoes. Naturally, there are always veggie options like the butternut squash and chickpea tagine. Desserts tend to be re-imagined old faves such as the hot toddy posset and the sticky toffee hazelnut pudding with salted caramel and vanilla ice-cream.
