On Cockburn Street in Edinburgh city centre, Gurkha Café is a well established restaurant which serves dishes from Nepal, the Himalayas and North India. Scenes of Nepalese life line the walls while the exposed rafters help give the impression that you just might be dining in a mountain hut.
From the mo mo steamed dumpling starters to main courses like the chicken marinated with Nepalese herbs – all cooked in a thick sauce – there are lots of dishes from the Himalayan region at Gurkha Café. Nepalese food has a healthy reputation for using very little ghee and that is evident in choices such as the lamb choila, a grilled lamb dish from the Kathmandu valley.
Indian food aficionados will also have a lot to look forward to. From chicken biryani and lamb sheek kebabs cooked in the tandoor to sag aloo and lamb madras, it is all there. As always with restaurants from this part of the world, there is a wide range of vegetarian dishes on offer. Seafood lovers are also well catered for with barbecued king prawns; sea bass cooked in the tandoor and a selection of dishes made with pangasius fish.
Right in the middle of the city centre, on Cockburn Street, Gurkha Café is a three minute walk from Waverley train station and five minutes from the tram line and many bus routes of Princes Street. There is limited on-street pay parking and a large pay car park at New Street. From Harvey Nicks to the National Gallery of Scotland, many of Edinburgh’s top attractions are within easy walking distance.
