Lovely meal with an amazing view over the Esplanade

This was our first visit and found it very good, there was a lift up to the restaurant which my friend who had an ankle injury found useful. The menu was imaginative and the ambience was excellent.

Scottish Italian dining by Edinburgh Castle

Part of the Contini family’s group of three Edinburgh restaurants, Cannonball Restaurant & Bar is a bright and airy dining room at the top of a three storey former school. The lower floors feature a gelateria, porridge bar and café. The top floor decor is smart but simple and the room has panoramic views of the city including the adjacent castle. The location may be tourist central and indeed Cannonball Restaurant & Bar has lots to offer gastronomically curious visitors. However, its culinary aims go far beyond many of its more tourist-centric peers.

Scottish ingredients, Italian heritage

All of the Contini outlets skilfully blend well sourced local ingredients with Italian culinary know-how. At Cannonball Restaurant & Bar this results in dishes that read like a tour of Scotland’s artisan producers. The menus change according to the ingredients on season but typical main courses might be the Ramsay’s smoked ham hock and creamed Musselburgh leek macaroni or the Clash Farm pork belly with creamed kale and Victor’s honey roasted beetroot and apples.
The ingredients range from earthy – such as the Findlay’s haggis cannonballs with pickled turnip, mustard cream and Glengoyne whisky marmalade – to luxurious. Diners have the option of dishes like the half or whole, grilled Scottish lobster served with watercress salad, Amalfi lemon and garlic butter and hand-cut chips.

Edinburgh city centre transport

Cannonball Restaurant & Bar is on Castlehill at the top of the Royal Mile. The trams and major bus routes of Princes Street are a ten minute walk as is Waverley station. On-street parking is possible on nearby streets. All the attractions of Edinburgh’s atmospheric Old Town are within easy walking distance.
