The Atholl is part of The Howard hotel on Great King Street, right in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town. Originally a private dining room for guests, this elegant, Georgian room is now open to non-residents. Filled with flowers and seating just fourteen diners, it is an intimate space offering fine food, a great wine list and attentive service. The restaurant is included in The Michelin Guide and has 2 AA Rosettes.
The finest, seasonal and local produce is used in The Atholl to create modern Scottish dishes. The menus change regularly but typical starters include the Mallaig scallops with a herb crumble, parsnip purée and sorrel dressing or the braised pork belly with a tamarind glaze, pickled vegetables and a rocket salad. Popular main courses include the seared Hebrides halibut; the twice baked goat’s cheese soufflé and the Scottish beef fillet which is served with potato rosti, samphire, roasted cherry tomatoes and a shallot reduction.
The Howard is on Great King Street. Princes Street and the National Portrait Gallery are a ten minute walk while the Botanic Gardens can be reached in twenty minutes. There is some, limited on-street parking. Taxis are plentiful. Waverley train station is a ten minute drive.
