Opened in 2004 as the first of Victor and Carina Contini’s group of three Edinburgh restaurants, Ristorante blends contemporary Italian cooking with well sourced local ingredients and imported Italian specialities. Set in an imposing converted banking hall on George Street, Contini Ristorante is grand yet also attractively feminine in its neat palette of pink, grey and white.
Whether a dish uses imported Italian specialities, local artisan products or even vegetables from the Continis’ kitchen garden, it is all about the ingredients at Contini Ristorante. So a starter of fried Scottish baby squid will be paired with Italian courgette ribbons and Amalfi lemon while rigatoni pasta is served with meatballs made with veal from Peelham Farm in the Borders. The pizza are made with caputo flour and topped with origin-protected mozzarella di bufala campana. The menus change regularly but a typical main course might be the saltimbocca made with char grilled free range chicken breast, Prosciutto di Parma DOP, fresh sage, white wine butter sauce and sautéed Carroll’s Heritage potatoes. Breakfasts, morning coffees and after work aperitivos are also popular at Contini Ristorante.
Contini Ristorante is on George Street in Edinburgh city centre. The trams and major bus routes of Princes Street are a three minute walk. Waverley station is a ten minute stroll. City centre shopping, Princes Street Gardens and two of the capital’s national galleries are a five minute walk.
