Named after the Royal Yacht Britannia which is berthed nearby, Britannia Spice is located in a former whisky warehouse on Commercial Street. The restaurant itself is in ship-shape condition; immaculately clean with rope ladders and ships’ helms carefully chosen to accentuate the maritime theme. Child-friendly and wheelchair accessible, Britannia Spice serves multi-ethnic cuisine with dishes from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Thailand. An AA Rosette for culinary excellence is the latest in a long line of awards.
Items on the menu ranges from chicken pakora, tom yum soup and prawn cocktail to curries, biryanis and sirloin steak. Some dishes on particular that have received praise include the Himalayan momo – steamed Nepalese dumplings – the amer murgh – chicken cooked with mango pulp, cream and selected spices – and the tandoori lamb chop which is marinated in ginger and mustard before being charcoal roasted.
Britannia Spice is on Commercial Street in Leith and has ample parking as well as a bus stop right outside with services into the city. Ocean Terminal shopping centre and the Royal Yacht Britannia are a five minute walk from the restaurant.
